THE WALKING DEAD – TOO FAR GONE

SPOILER WARNING: The following will be a discussion of last night’s mid-season finale of The Walking Dead.

Prior to yesterday’s finale, the previous two episodes was all about Governor. We got to see more about the man he once was before the world that we now know became his and everyone else’s new reality. Those episodes was only a prelude of what was to come. The road to revenge against Rick and the others at the prison was a long and dark one.

On this preverbal road, he was welcomed into a group that was led by one of his former soldiers. An ally he would later kill and essentially take over his spot as leader. The Governor even gets a second chance at a family with a young lady and her daughter, Meghan.
He later kidnaps Hershel and Michonne while their vehicle unfortunately was in need of gas on the side of the road. He uses them to tap into the insecurity of the others in his camp and their need to survive. He ends up building an army “willing to kill” in order to take over the prison.

The Governor an his militia arrive at the prison and he gives Rick 24 hours to clear out peacefully or else. Rick does his best to reach an understanding with him or at the very least his militia by stating that no more blood needs to be spilled. Anyone who enters through those gates is now one of them. And just when it appeared that perhaps he reached any sense of humanity left in the Governor, the unthinkable happens. With the use of Michonne’s sword, the Governor slices through Hershel’s neck killing him. The showdown at the prison is on.

Shots are fired, the cannon blows truck size holes into the prison walls. Lives on both sides are lost. Daryl fights off walkers and militia alike. Everyone goes off in different directions. Rick and the Governor have a fistfight on the outside with the Governor getting the best of Rick. He continued to wail on Rick until Michonne put her sword through him mortally wounding the Governor. Moments later Lilly finished him off by shooting him, ending his life.
Chaos continued to ensue as a bloody Rick searched for Carl and baby Judy. After reuniting with his son, Rick and Carl become distraught after discovering the bloodstained baby seat but no Judy. Is she still alive? Was she taken? The last scenes show Rick and Carl fleeing the war torn fiery mess of the prison.
This was a very emotional episode on so many levels. It echoed so much of what we’ve come to expect from the comic. The Walking Dead returns to AMC in February.
