ARROW SEASON TWO FINALE RECAP

A night after Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD had its season finale that set a positive tone for its future, DC had its own finale with Arrow. The episode titled “Unthinkable” lived up to that description and so much more. From this point on, spoilers ahead.

The episode begins with Oliver and company holed up at the clock tower waiting to see if Roy has been cured of the mirakuru. Just as he wakes up, they are attacked by Slade Wilson’s army of super soldiers. They are able to escape and with an assist from Lyla, who wiped out Wilson‘s goons with a rocket launcher.

With an imminent drone strike about ready to hit Starling City courtesy of Amanda Waller to thwart the threat of Slade Wilson’s army, Diggle and Lyla head to ARGUS to prevent it at all cost. Part of that cost, working with members of the Suicide Squad.
While Diggle has the Suicide Squad, Oliver has an unexpected alliance with Nyssa al Ghul and the League of Assassins thanks in large part because of  Sara agreeing to go back with them when this is all over. To say they’re in a killing mood, doesn’t even begin to describe it. Let the mayhem begin.

Then there is Thea Queen and her new found daddy, Malcolm Merlyn. The ground work for next season will most assuredly involve this new alliance. When Thea discovers Roy has as many secrets as her Queen family has, she decides to leave town with Malcolm.

Now, let’s get to the confrontation that has been building up for the better part of two seasons, Slade Wilson versus Oliver Queen. A couple of episodes back when Slade murdered Oliver’s mother in front of him, he promised that another must die. He’s about ready to keep that promise by kidnapping the “love” of Oliver’s life… Felicity. It will turn out that she really isn’t and she is being used to trap Slade. Oliver knowing that Slade has had his Manor bugged and filled with mini cameras, decides to use it to his advantage. Oliver professes his “love” for Felicity knowing he’s being watched. As that happens, he hands her a mirakuru-cure syringe hoping she’ll get close enough to Slade to inject him with it.
As planned, Felicity does get kidnapped by Slade as well as Laurel. Oliver confronts him and rips into him by stating that Shado wouldn’t approve of the madman he has become. With Slade’s guard down, Felicity is able to inject him with the cure. With a now even playing field, let the fight begin.

Slade and Oliver go toe to toe in a rousing, epic fight that leaves both bloodied and broken. Their present day fight is overlaid with flashbacks of their fight on the island where we finally see how Slade loses his eye due to Oliver stabbing an arrow through it. Wow! Fast forward back to the present, and their back and forth ends after Oliver uses rope arrows to tie a staggering Slade to a post. With Slade now in custody, Oliver calls Amanda to stand down her drones and she reluctantly complies. Time to breath.

Oliver spares Slade by having him imprisoned in of all places the very island they met five years earlier, now run by ARGUS. Did we see the last of Slade Wilson? I hope not because Manu Bennett, the man behind Slade’s Deathstroke is a gifted actor and delight to watch.
Questions to ponder for Season Three:
  1. How will Thea’s departure and alliance with Malcolm affect Oliver?
  2. Will Sara return to Starling City?
  3. Will Detective Lance survive? After saying goodbye to Sara, he collapses in front of Laurel and we see the internal injuries he is faced with.
  4. Felicity and Oliver? Let’s just say it’s complicated.
  5. Did we see the birth of the Red Arrow with Roy donning the red mask?
And finally…
  1. Amanda Waller and how much of a role she played in Oliver’s life post island and prior to his return to Starling City.
This should be fun come September and beyond. And speaking of beyond, check out The Flash teaser trailer below. This spin-off series is set to make its debut this Fall on the CW.

May the Dork be with you,
