AGENT CARTER: SEASON FINALE RECAP

Let me begin by saying that I’m a huge fan of Agent Carter. I thought mini-series was overall quite excellent. With that said, the finale could have been better. There was so much building up to Russian agents versus S.S.R. after the events of the previous episode that led to the death of the S.S.R. boss. Those men, who opposed Carter, now stand with her against this threat. Warning spoilers ahead…

Every episode to this point was building up for this conclusion and yet Peggy Carter seems somewhat removed from the action. I guess I was hoping that she would be the leader instead just one of the “guys” who have banded together. Given how she was treated and viewed by her fellow agents, there would have been a sense of irony in having her take the lead.

It’s a race against time as the Russians who are in possession of Howard Stark’s super gas and ready to unleash it on New York City. The long awaited encounter between Carter and Dottie (a precursor to the program that created Black Widow) was less than epic with the focus being more on Dottie and her schoolgirl mental state.

The final showdown comes full circle and harkens back to the first time we met Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Here she makes a passionate plea to Howard who is flying overhead and under the hypnotic influence of Fennoff to not drop the super gas on Manhattan. It was so reminiscent of her conversation with Steve that reminds us why we love her character.

The crisis is eventually averted and the S.S.R. is given credit for saving the day. Carter’s involvement is barely recognized by the higher ups in the government. She does have one last tearful goodbye to Steve when she pours out the last remaining vial of his blood into river below. In the end, Peggy and Angie move into Stark’s mansion and the origins on how Hydra worked their way into the government and what would become S.H.I.E.LD. with the appearance of Dr. Arnim Zola.
I hope ABC brings back Agent Carter. Not sure if a full 20+ episode season is necessary but another “mini-series” would do just fine. If it’s one and done, so be it because overall it was quite satisfying. But Hayley Atwell has proven that she belongs and she is as much an Avenger as any of our heroes. Let’s hope we haven’t seen the last of her.
May the Dork be with you,
