Sometimes something as simple as a cantaloupe can lead to war. Such was the case of Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead called “Bury Me Here”. Warning, spoilers ahead…
Richard has been itching to get Ezekiel to take up arms against the Saviors for some time now. He was even willing to sacrifice Carol a couple of episodes ago till Daryl put a stop to it. There’s an old cliché stating to be careful what one wishes for. Ezekiel and his group are headed to their weekly meeting with the Saviors when a roadblock slows them down but no one is present. They continued to the meeting place but are now late. This causes added tension between the two groups. When the Saviors notice a missing cantaloupe and example needs to be set. Richard steps up to Jared who is pointing a gun and is willing to die. Jared ends up shooting Benjamin instead who later dies from his wounds.
Morgan, who appears to be on the verge of a breakdown, discovers the missing cantaloupe hidden under a crate along the street where the roadblock took place. He realizes that it was Richard who sabotaged the exchange. When confronted, Richard confesses that he thought if he was killed, Ezekiel would have no choice but to fight. He didn’t mean for Benjamin to die. At the next exchange, Morgan murders Richard in front of the Saviors and tells them why.
Later, Morgan tells Carol what happened to Glenn, Abraham, Spencer and Olivia by the hand of Negan. This causes her to return to the Kingdom and prepare to fight the Saviors.
