Happy Friday everyone! I figure let’s end the week with some humor. Serious humor but humor just the same. As important as it is to accessorize your costume for Comic Con whether its a lightsaber, a phaser or a Klingon Bat’leth, the geek bag is an essential piece to the puzzle. So what is a Geek Bag? It’s a cross between Batman’s utility belt and the bag Chewbacca carried with him but never used. It’s what keeps your time and life at the CON in order.
So, no matter how many days you go to the CON, a bag becomes a necessity. But what kind of bag is the question? This will always be a personal choice but here are some tips from years of experience of failing and surviving the CON.
One to Two day visit: A messenger bag or sling bag would suffice. Chances are if you’re only going for 1 to 2 days, you’re not getting any commissions from Artist Alley. So the need to carry a sketchbook isn’t very likely. But these bags certainly come in handy when picking up some swag items from the hundreds of vendors in attendance. Besides, you’ll need a place to keep your program and schedule of the days events.
Three to Four day visit: A sturdy backpack is a must. And if you get one with a belt strap, major bonus. This type of bag is perfect to not only house your program & schedule but a sketchbook or two should you desire to commission any of the artist in Artist Alley. Here’s a tip: if you want a sketch get it the artist(s) on Day 1 because it may take all 4 days to get it back.
A good backpack gives you a hands free approach to everything. Sure, a messenger or sling bag could do the same but their smaller and more times than not while moving through the crowded floor it has the potential to get snagged.
Another positive to the backpack is the water pocket. You’re going to want to quench your thirst. The convention floor tends to be very crowded and can get quite warm so water or any non-alcoholic beverage for that matter is a must.
So there you have it, an insiders guide to the ever important Geek Bag! Next time we’ll talk about how to make a statement with your bag and make it stand out.
May the Dork be with you,
