GEEK PORTRAYAL ON TV

Thanks to The Big Bang Theory, being a Geek has never been hotter than it is today. Two words that traditionally didn’t go together until now. It is largely because of their success that shows like Comic Book Men and most recently King of the Nerds have come into our homes. What I find interesting is the same people who may revere TBBT, have negative feelings towards the other two shows. Calling both stereotypical of the geek culture. But doesn’t TBBT do the same to an extent?

Personally I love Big Bang. I look at it as celebration of who we are as a fan base. It’s also a show about acceptance no matter who we are. But I also enjoy Comic Book Men for the same reasons. I admit to spending many hours at the local neighborhood shop with friends and foes alike having similar discussions and coming across the most “interesting” of individuals. I think it’s an honest portrayal of what goes on in any particular shop across America. With the exception of Kevin Smith stopping by every now and then.

As far as King of the Nerds, an argument can be made that it does feed into the geek stereotype. But to me its no different from any other show that has a predominate type of cast ala a show revolving around cops, doctors or lawyers. The same perceptions play out weekly on these traditional shows. This one is about nerds. KOTN although a reality show still has a target audience to appeal to and I think they do just that. It’s hardly a great show but it is harmless and whether we want to admit it or not we geeks do have a tendency to act just the way it is portrayed on KOTN. And there is nothing wrong with that.

About The Dork Knight 521 Articles
James aka “The Dork Knight” is a blogger and writer based out of Upstate New York. For James, it all started with a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… when he dragged his mom to see The Empire Strikes Back 10 weeks in a row. He lives and breathes nerd culture. James is proof that a Star Wars fanatic can be a passionate Trekkie as well. So much so James dressed up as Captain Kirk to the premiere of Star Trek VI in 1991 and still has the uniform. When it comes to Comic Books, Sci-Fi or Fantasy whether in print or digital, in the theatre or on my TV screen, I’m all about it and I love it. So bring your Phaser (set to stun), Lightsaber, Sonic Screwdriver, a Wand, Mjolnir or the Ring to rule them all, because this site is for the dork in all of us.
