STAR WARS: SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE aka EPISODE 5 1/2

Ever since the Walt Disney Corporation bought the franchise for over four billion dollars, the internet has been and will continue to be all abuzz about the future of Star Wars. Not too long after it was announced that a new trilogy will be produced with JJ Abrams at the helm for at least Episode 7, stand alone films featuring a young Han Solo and one focusing on our favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett has surfaced.

Now, there is talk that EP7 will feature the return of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and possibly Mark Hamill to the roles that made them household names. As a Star Wars fanatic, I couldn’t be more excited by this. But I have to ask, what about also considering an animated movie based on the novel, Shadow of the Empire? This New York Times bestseller written by Steve Perry came out in the mid 90’s and focused on the events between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Hence the episode 5 1/2 reference. It introduces one of the most interesting and deadly characters from the expanded universe, Xizor. Xizor is the leader of a powerful crime syndicate who owes a favor to the Emperor. This pits him against Luke’s father, Darth Vader. One wants Luke dead and the other alive. Sound interesting? It was. It’s a great story and a worthy addition to the Star Wars legacy.

I think it would be a wonderful relaunching of Star Wars if Disney considers doing this. Comics and video games based on this story has already been made. What is missing is the actual story itself. Fans love it and are eager to see it put to film. Think about how cool it would be to hear the animated voices of Mark, Carrie, Billy Dee Williams as Lando and of course James Earl Jones as Vader. Disney has the tools and a proven story at their disposal. Now, make it happen.

May the Dork be with you,

James aka “The Dork Knight” is a blogger and writer based out of Upstate New York. For James, it all started with a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… when he dragged his mom to see The Empire Strikes Back 10 weeks in a row. He lives and breathes nerd culture. James is proof that a Star Wars fanatic can be a passionate Trekkie as well. So much so James dressed up as Captain Kirk to the premiere of Star Trek VI in 1991 and still has the uniform. When it comes to Comic Books, Sci-Fi or Fantasy whether in print or digital, in the theatre or on my TV screen, I’m all about it and I love it.
