Included in the Blu-ray version of Iron Man 3 is one of Marvel’s one shot short films. This time around the focus was on Agent Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) from Captain America. The 15 minute one shot itself was quite entertaining. The story takes place post WW2 and the “death” of Captain America where Agent Carter is now relegated to a desk job at the male dominated SSR. Overlooked for every mission that comes their way, Agent Carter while working late one night takes a call alerting her that the villain named Zodiac has been spotted. She decides to take on this mission on her own.
Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter |
From this point on when she arrives at the warehouse and takes on and takes out several adversaries (all male), all I could see was the red, white and blue plus a sprinkle of gold that is Wonder Woman. Hayley Atwell could be and should be considered for the role of the Amazon Princess. Given the fact that we’re introduced to Agent Carter during WW2 and that Wonder Woman’s origin story takes place during the same time period, Ms. Atwell would be so believable as a possible Diana Prince (Wonder Woman’s alter ego). As Agent Carter, Atwell was both fearless and commanding with a strong stage presence. This is everything Wonder Woman is and should be.
I know there is talk that Marvel is toying around with the idea of creating an Agent Carter television series on the heels of Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.. TV shows are such a gamble. One bad week could lead to cancellation. This is not to suggest that movies are not an expensive gamble because they certainly are. But a 2-hour film with the right premise and setup and the right director at the helm to execute it, is a far better choice than a 20+ episodic series.
Regardless of what happens or whatever the powers that be at DC and Warner Brothers do with Wonder Woman, Hayley Atwell should at the very least be looked at. I liked her a lot in Captain America but it wasn’t until this one shot that I realized how good she could be. We shall see.
