Who would’ve thought that the team that brought us the surprising hit comedy 21 Jump Street would be equally responsible for not only Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs but now this wonderfully creative and entertaining film called, The LEGO Movie.
There is so much to love and marvel at while watching. It’s a sugar rush of the highest order. The story centers around a construction worker named Emmett (voiced by Chris Pratt) who lives his life of conformity like so many in his “everything is awesome” community, through a series of checklists and instructions. Such instructions are handed down by President Business (Will Ferrell) who looks to control every aspect of that world with the use of the kragle.
When Emmett comes across a mysterious woman named Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) he accidentally stumbles upon an odd shaped brick that was buried deep in his construction site. His discovery of the “piece of resistance” deems him to be “The Special” by Wyldstyle as prophesied by Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman).
Now pursued by President Business’ henchmen, Bad Cop (Liam Neeson) to retrieve that “piece” at all costs, Emmet, Wyldstyle and Vitruvius along with the help from Batman (Will Arnett) look to evade Bad Cop and devise a plan for Emmett to use this “piece of resistance” and hopefully defeat President Business once and for all. To make a dire situation worse is when the other Master Builders come to realize that Emmett is not much of builder they question his worth as “The Special” and begin to take matters into their own hands. When that happens, Emmett can’t help but wonder the same.
Between all the bright colors and wonderful creations that are on display, there is a message to behold. That message, is about individually, creativity and building your own path through life. Life isn’t lived through an instruction manual it is lived through experiences good and bad. It’s these life experiences that make us special in our own unique way. A powerful message told and shown in a very simple and awesome way… brick by LEGO brick.
