Warning, spoilers ahead… For the last couple of months the show runners for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have mandated that things will start to turn for the better. They have even gone as far as dubbing this new direction as “Uprising”. This new course of action started with the mid-season finale several weeks ago with the formal introduction of the Marvel character Deathlok and its continued development of its Clairvoyant story arc.
Last nights T.A.H.I.T.I. episode furthered that mandate with both the debut of Bill Paxton as field agent John Garrett and a look into its future with a visit from Asgard by the Marvel villain, Lorelei. Not to mention next weeks guest star Jaimie Alexander as warrior Sif from the Thorfilms. This marks the first true connection from its cinematic universe to that of the small screen with all due respect to Coulson himself as well as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders’ Agent Hill. Fans and critics alike demanded more and they may just get it.

Marvel like DC has a wealth of characters. But to date, they haven’t utilized it yet on SHIELD. Part of the problem that plagued this series from the start was the thought that by simply attaching the Marvel name it would automatically give them a dedicated audience. And while that may have been true for the first few episodes, in order to maintain that audience, you still need to write compelling stories and given the universe they’re in, there are also expectations. This is the one area where DC has surpassed Marvel with the CW’s Arrow. Now, SHIELD looks to ready itself to make a challenge on the TV front and finally give the fans what they’ve been asking for.

This is not to say that everything regarding the slightly annoying character of Syke was resolved. Or Coulson’s obsession in saving her all the while continuing on his quest to fully understand what happened when he “died” during the “Battle of New York”. Oh contraire, it only gets more interesting. We’ll have to remain patient and see exactly how interesting things get especially as we get closer to Captain America : Winter Solider.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appears on Tuesday nights 8PM EST on ABC
