If you ever find yourself visiting New York City and in particular Times Square between now and January 2015, may I suggest going to Discovery Times Square Exhibition Hall and seeing Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N., (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network). This 10,000 square foot exhibit tells the story of the battle of New York that took place during The Avengers film. It showcases props and costumes from your favorite Avenger as well as villains like Loki, Red Skull, Hydra officers and Chitauri warriors. The experience is totally interactive. As you enter, visitors are recruited as probationary agents by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Felix Blake (Titus Welliver). You’re even given your own ID card, which is pretty cool for the adults as much as it is for the kids.
Besides the props and costumes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, probationary agents learn about the human body and Gamma rays in Bruce Banner’s (The Hulk) lab, In the Captain America zone, you can test your strength and endurance. As you enter Thor’s zone, you can learn about the solar system and the “nine realms”. There’s also a holographic Mjolnir that is very cool to look at. And finally, you can learn to be like Iron Man and control a simulated space suit. It definitely brings out the kid in all of us.
At the end, we are told to hang on to our ID cards for future use. What exactly will that entail, remains to be seen. Even after the exhibit closes in January it doesn’t mean the end of the road. I believe the S.T.A.T.I.O.N. experience will continue in New York City well beyond that date.
And before you go, check out the gift shop for some cool if not overly priced official Marvel merchandise. If you’re a fan of Marvel and especially The Avengers, check out this exhibit. You’ll be glad you did.
