When X-Men: DOFP came out last year, many wondered what happened to Rogue? For months leading up to the films release, both trailers and set photos showed Anna Paquin and her silver streak hair fairly prominent. However, when the film did get released, her role was all but absent. So, is it better, the same or worse? Warning spoilers ahead…
The film itself is the same. Nothing really changes from the original with the exception of the Rogue scenes that take place nearly 100 minutes into the film. Yes there is a splattering of extended scenes here and there but they do nothing to enhance the overall narrative. Ironically the one character that gets reduced a little bit is Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) whose scenes in the final act were replaced with Rogue.
I can see why Director Bryan Singer left out the Rogue scenes. She comes across as a polite after-thought. Her appearance in the final act is merely a means to bring her into the fold and justify her appearance in the end when Wolverine wakes up at Xavier Academy and basically erases the events of X-Men: Last Stand. The best new scene had nothing to do with Rogue and in my opinion, should have been included in the theatrical cut and that was the scene between Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Their scene together harkens back to X-Men: First Class. It was poignant and brought Mystique to a point where her actions in the end are far more believable than originally shown.
I personally like director’s cuts when they are first released to video. I like having the choice between the theatrical version and original vision of the director. I don’t however like when companies double dip. Why this version couldn’t be added to the initial DVD/Blu-ray package, makes no sense to me. This Rogue Cut is slightly better than the theatrical but my overall feelings for DOFP hasn’t changed. It’s just a longer film.
