The second season of Gotham has hit the mid-season mark and I have to say, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen thus far. I know some have complained that it’s much darker than the other DC TV properties. This is quite true but we are also talking about Gotham. Any Batman fan that has read the many adventures of the Dark Knight knows that the city of Gotham is its own dark character. It should be no surprise to anyone that the show itself has become dark and gritty. After all, this is not Batman ’66 Gotham we’re talking about. Warning, spoilers ahead…
So much went on during the mid-season finale that some of it felt a bit rushed which is a shame because overall this season has been a very strong one. We have Theo Galavan kidnapping Bruce so that he could sacrifice him for the sins of the Wayne family of centuries past. Then there’s Jim Gordon who is building an army minus the GCPD and instead opting to work reluctantly with Penguin to take down Galavan and save Bruce. In between all of that, we find out that Leslie is pregnant with Gordon’s baby and Alfred is one tough butler.
Everyone has an agenda in Gotham and at the center of it all is Galavan. He wants Wayne Enterprises and all that comes with it and will do so at the expense of Bruce Wayne. Penguin wants revenge on Galavan for killing his mother several episodes earlier and Jim wants to bring Galavan to justice for all the crimes he has committed against the city of Gotham and for personal reasons that involve his former love, Barbara. Whew… that was a mouth full.
The long and the short of it are Jim, Penguin and their band of expendables that included Selina and a gun toting Alfred save Bruce. As payback for being saved by Penguin in the previous episode, Jim hands over Galavan and Penguin exacts his revenge against him with a baseball bat. Galavan begs for mercy and Jim shoots him dead.
Galavan’s body is taken to a lab-like facility where we see what’s left of an umbrella lodged down his throat. What we also see are several bodies floating in some kind of liquid. What kind of facility this is and whom are the people running it, remains unknown at this time but something tells me we’ll soon find out. As seemingly as it appears that one story arc has come to an end, the final scene has set up Gotham’s impending return in February in a chilling way. It teased the debut of another member of the famed rogue gallery, Mr. Freeze!
May the Dork be with you,
