SUPERGIRL: TRUTH, JUSTICE & THE AMERICAN WAY RECAP

When you hear the phrase “Truth, Justice, and the American Way,” the image of Superman comes to mind. At least it does for me. For Supergirl, she is faced with such a dilemma that challenges the very essence of those beliefs. Warning, spoilers ahead…

Following the death of her Aunt Astra by the hand of Alex, Kara has been in full vigilante mode. Believing that it was actually Hank who killed Astra, Kara and Hank’s relationship is icy at best. In fact, Kara’s relationship in general, with several characters becomes strained throughout Monday night’s episode. Consider it growing pains for young Kara who is still very much in the learning process when it comes to understanding her powers and how to use them for the greater good. In a lot of ways she sees things in black and white, right and wrong. There is no grey area. We all know that’s not how life works, there’s always another way.
This week’s threat came in the form of Master Jailer, a Fort Rozz guard who goes all Dirty Harry with his style of justice when hunting down escaped inmates. With Supergirl and the DEO going after Master Jailer for the destruction he is causing, the question on how the DEO and more specifically Supergirl is handling the detained Maxwell Lord is raised by none other than James Olsen. This challenge doesn’t sit well with Kara. In short, James questions if Maxwell doesn’t get a fair trial, how different are they really when compared to someone like Maxwell Lord or Master Jailer who runs amuck with their own brand of what’s right?

The eventual battle between Supergirl and Master Jailer was fun and action filled. Master Jailer more than holds his own against Supergirl. It could have been better and I guess I’ve gotten spoiled when I see the production values on such shows as Arrowand The Flash. Supergirl as a whole has a wonderful production value but this time around, it seemed a bit held back during this episode.
The elephant in the room though revolved around the increase tension between Kara and Hank. This tension will only get worse once Kara finds out the truth about Alex being the one responsible for Astra’s death. I like where this is headed and can’t wait to see how it further develops over the course of this season. If this wasn’t bad enough, there’s Non. Out of some sense of Kryptonian loyalty, Non asks Kara to participate in Astra’s funeral, which she does. He does however warn Kara that the next coffin will be hers. This fight is long from over.

There was one more subplot that was introduced and that will continue to grow over the course of the next few episodes and that was the introduction of Siobhan Smtyhe (Italia Ricci). If the name is familiar, it should be. Siobhan is the future supervillain, Silver Banshee. As for right now, she is only Cat’s new assistant and with it, an instant rival to Kara.

James aka “The Dork Knight” is a blogger and writer based out of Upstate New York. For James, it all started with a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… when he dragged his mom to see The Empire Strikes Back 10 weeks in a row. He lives and breathes nerd culture. James is proof that a Star Wars fanatic can be a passionate Trekkie as well. So much so James dressed up as Captain Kirk to the premiere of Star Trek VI in 1991 and still has the uniform. When it comes to Comic Books, Sci-Fi or Fantasy whether in print or digital, in the theatre or on my TV screen, I’m all about it and I love it.
