Usually the episode that precedes a season finale is packed with lots of ups and downs and additional questions that need to be answered by seasons end. With “Myriad” however, there was a lot more second half action setting up what’s to come but as a whole, not so much. Warning, spoilers ahead…
When we last left Kara, she had declared her feelings to Jimmy but his response was not what she had expected, in fact, he no response whatsoever. This is when Kara realized that he wasn’t the only one in a trance like state. It would seem like the entire population of National City has fallen under a mind control spell by Non. The episode started off with a bang as Supergirl battled Maxima at the DEO after Lucy (under Non’s control), breaks loose at the baddie’s that the DEO had housed. The fight sequence was well orchestrated. So much so that I would’ve like to see more of it.
It was nice to see Maxwell Lord make an appearance. He’s been a better “villain” than some of the others who have appeared this season. A cerebral opponent is sometimes more scarier than someone with super strength. As luck would have it, he happens to be unaffected by the Non’s mind control. He also protected Cat with the same device. With only Lord, Cat and Supergirl unaffected by Non’s control, Lord comes up with some half-baked plan to save the day by unleashing a bomb with Kryptonite dust that would cost the lives of only 300k. Really? There was a moment that Supergirl even contemplated the idea. Thankfully it didn’t amount to anything as we move on.
The central idea behind this episode, was what would you be willing to do for the greater good. We know what Maxwell Lord was willing to do. Even Superman’s appearance or lack thereof fell to Non’s mind control. Which begs the question, why haven’t Non do this before? Teasing Superman’s arrival only to negate it by the mind control was cheap and unnecessary. As far as I’m concerned, Non is a subpar baddie. He’s not evil enough to hate but he’s also not good enough to root for.
Another great return to action was seeing J’onn J’onzz and Alex, highlighted by J’onn’s fight with Indigo. J’onn’s fate is left unclear when it appears Indigo appears to have killed him. As far Alex, her return to National City with J’onn turned out to a bad idea with her being captured and now under the mind control of Non but ended with a great setup for the finale. Non fashions Alex in a Kryptonite suit forcing Supergirl to fight her own sister.
Overall this week’s Supergirl wasn’t the seasons best to date but it closed on a high that will make me look towards next week’s season finale. I hope it’s just a season finale and not a series finale because as of this writing, Supergirlhas yet to be renewed for a second season. The preview seems action packed and exciting. I’m hopeful that the closing moments of Monday’s episode will lead to a stellar finale and a hopefully a bright future of many seasons to come.
May the Dork be with you,
