IN DEFENSE OF SUPERGIRL

It’s been an incredible ride for our Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl filled with some highs, some lows and everything in between. This was to be expected for any freshman series. When CBS announced which series was being renewed for new seasons, Supergirlwas inexplicably missing from that announcement. Immediately the fan base worried about its future. From a ratings standpoint, Supergirl soared from its premiere episode and held a steady audience for most of the season. It’s that type of response that gave fans like myself some hope that an announcement for a season 2 was on the horizon. But the longer CBS went without making one the more anxious we became. Things got more dicey when it CBS stated that a season 2 was dependent on budget. Reports I’ve seen indicate that Supergirl cost between 2-3 million per episode. That’s a high number for any series. A 20+ episode season could easily cost 60 million to make. To put that in some kind of perspective, the movie Deadpool cost FOX a mere 50 million. There have also been rumors regarding licensing fees and Warner Brothers as well. I understand the trepidation CBS has towards wanting to fork over such a heavy monetary commitment.

Finally, word came down this past week that Supergirl will fly again but not on CBS. Instead, the series will join the already DC Comics heavy CW network this fall. The Girl of Steel will join Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and another DC property, iZombie. This is a great move for The CW. The crossover possibilities are endless. As of right now, The Flash airs on Tuesday night, Arrow on Wednesday and Legends on Thursday. Supergirlwhile on CBS aired on Monday’s. Imagine a 4-Series, 4-night crossover event? With multiverses and timelines having already been established, anything and everything can happen. Who wouldn’t want to see an interaction between former Supermen, Brandon Rousch and Dean Cain?
This move to a new network that already has established shows of the same content will only serve to benefit Supergirl. Actress Melissa Benoist has already shown that she can more than hold her own against the boys of The CW as she fully displayed during Supergirl/The Flashcrossover in late March. It can’t be stressed enough the importance of having a female superhero that is front and center on either the small screen or the big screen. Young girls should have someone to look up with great wonder as much as any young boy does with his favorite superhero. Bravo to DC and its producers in finding a way to continue the unlimited adventures of Supergirl

James aka “The Dork Knight” is a blogger and writer based out of Upstate New York. For James, it all started with a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… when he dragged his mom to see The Empire Strikes Back 10 weeks in a row. He lives and breathes nerd culture. James is proof that a Star Wars fanatic can be a passionate Trekkie as well. So much so James dressed up as Captain Kirk to the premiere of Star Trek VI in 1991 and still has the uniform. When it comes to Comic Books, Sci-Fi or Fantasy whether in print or digital, in the theatre or on my TV screen, I’m all about it and I love it. So bring your Phaser (set to stun), Lightsaber, Sonic Screwdriver, a Wand, Mjolnir or the Ring to rule them all, because this site is for the dork in all of us.
