Some more strangeness is coming to Gotham as Season 3 started Monday night. Dubbed “Mad City”, Gotham is so different, insanely different from DC’s other TV properties that at this point, I’m at ease with the fact that a likely crossover will never take place because they don’t even remotely seem to be part of the same universe. Warning, spoilers ahead…
The Season 3 opener, “Better to Reign in Hell” was like an opening move of a chess match. Pawns move across the board to open it up for the real moves to conquer the king. I’m convinced there is no good guy in Gotham even Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) has his own issues and is now a bounty hunter that I actually like. He’ll be able to do more without the restraints of being a cop. It has been about six months since the Indian Hill gang led by Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) has been on the loose and terrorized Gotham. The ever-inept GCPD has done little to put a stop to it. While that is happening, Bruce wants to take out the Court of Owls but how exactly is another question. The one thing the show runners over at Gotham need to do rather quickly is make young Bruce more confident and savvy. After all, he is supposed to grow up to be the world’s greatest detective. Those seeds need to start flourishing now.
We’re introduced to Valerie Vale (played by Jamie Chung), a photojournalist who may or may not become Gordon’s new love interest as it appears that Lee (Morena Baccarin), has moved on with another man. At this stage, Gordon seems to have a death wish with his reckless behavior as he takes on the likes of a Killer Croc-type creature and dare I say went toe-to-toe with Man-Bat? Only time will tell if that’s the case.
I haven’t even mentioned Penguin and wacky Barbara yet. That is a work in progress especially with Fish roaming around. Then there’s faux Bruce Wayne. What’s his deal? And what does he want with Selina. And speaking of Selina, there’s her friend Ivy. By now most of us know that the character is being recast as an older and more seductive version of the poisonous one. And yet, they showed the original actress before meeting an untimely “demise”. How she returns and how they’ll explain her new look remains to be seen?
Some lingering questions from season two still need to be resolved. Next week’s preview showed Hugo Strange returning and one could only imagine what kind of chaos will follow.
May the Dork be with you,
