MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD: MEET THE NEW BOSS RECAP

After introducing Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna) in the premiere last week, Tuesday’s episode, “Meet the New Boss”, gave us a hint of his origins and how his Ghost Rider character fits into the overall storyline for Season 4. Warning, spoilers ahead…

It would appear that the full mystery surrounding Ghost Rider’s existence, the spirit haunting people and the Momentum Alternative Energy Lab might not have all its questions answered on SHIELD but a combination of SHIELD and the upcoming Doctor Strange. Honestly, it’s not a bad way to promote the film and use the vehicle of this series to help move it along. Little Easter Eggs like the Book of Sins and speaking of another Momentum Lab only furthers that connection.

As the title would suggest, we met the new boss aka the new director named Jeffrey, played by Jason O’Mara. As it turns out, he’s an Inhuman and just that alone makes him a very interesting choice for director. We see early on that he has a way of doing things and isn’t afraid to let Agent Coulson know who’s in charge. He even went as far as to question Coulson’s clouded attachment to both Daisy and May.  May would be removed by Jeffery and taken away after she had a psychotic episode from seeing the spirit haunting people who had visited headquarters. What will be his reaction be when he finds out Daisy and Ghost Rider are working together?

Speaking of Daisy and Ghost Rider, I like the vibe I get with the pairing of Daisy and Robbie. I already like it more than her and Ward. They have more in common than I think either one wish to admit and their banter is perfectly matched. The MCU has been moving steadily into this direction of a supernatural variety with SHIELD and to an extent the other series that appear on Netflix becoming the perfect bridges for these introductions that give life to the films.

As the episode drew to a close, I started to feel better about the possibilities of Ghost Rider playing such a focal point for the season. Agents of SHIELD is definitely embracing its dark side and the supernatural tone. As mentioned last week, the new time slot helps out tremendously with this new approach. Please note, SHIELD returns on October 11.
