Storybrooke has a new visitor, enter the Count of Monte Cristo. We learn through a series of flashbacks that the Count aka Edmond is set on finding and killing Charming and Snow. Regina learns of his arrival and warns the Charming’s of the Counts arrival and his ill intentions. She also tells them that she is responsible for this and wants to protect them now. Warning, spoilers ahead…
During the flashback sequence we see Edmond returning to confront and kill the Baron who falsely imprisoned him. The Evil Queen was present and offered Edmond a deal he seemingly can’t refuse. She task him to kill the Charming’s since she can’t do it but he has trouble going through with it when he encounters their handmaiden Charlotte who reminds him of his dead fiancée. Rumple has other plans because he needs them alive for his own benefit. He ends up poisoning Charlotte anyway. This compels Edmond to leave for the Land of Untold Stories to keep Charlotte alive. Charlotte’s fate is unfortunately sealed as her body is discovered by Henry and Regina. Meanwhile, Emma does her part of protecting her parents by trying to drive them out of town only to discover that a protection spell had been cast as we’ll later find out by the Evil Queen with some unwilling assistance from Zelena.
Edmond finally catches up with the Charming’s at the docks and faces off against them. He explains to them that he’s under the Evil Queen’s spell and has no choice. After knocking out the Charming’s, he goes in for the kill only to be stopped by Regina who arrives in the nick of time. With Charming and Snow out of commission, Edmond and Regina battle each other in a sword fight. Regina does her best to talk Edmond out of doing this but she’s unable to convince him. In a last ditch effort to save her friends, Regina throws her sword at Edmond killing him.
The Evil Queen appears and taunts Regina. Regina soon realizes that the Count was just a pawn. The plan was never for the Count to kill the Charming’s but instead to have Regina kill the Count and prove that darkness is still alive and well inside of her. The Evil Queen even teases her that everyone has untold stories they don’t want to tell and that Regina will destroy everyone’s happy ending.
One last thing of note, Emma who has been seeing August to discuss her visions confesses to him that the only person missing from her vision was Regina. Now the thoughts of whether or not it is Regina who’s under the cloak comes into play.
