They say when one door closes, a new one opens. When Supergirl transitioned to The CW from CBS, many worried that the series will take a huge hit. Well, new network equals no problem as Supergirl made her long awaited debut on The CW on Monday night and it was great! Even the look and feel is the same. One episode in and it’s already a seamless transition. Warning, spoilers ahead…
Now, before I recap the episode, “Adventures of Supergirl” lets discuss Superman. As I friend of mine stated last night while watching, we finally have a Clark Kent/Superman that we can embrace and not have to compare him with the late Christopher Reeve. I’ll be the first to admit I wasn’t sure about the casting but Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) who plays the new Man of Steel hooked me in from his first scene while talking to Perry White with his clumsy yet dorky persona. Hoechlin plays both sides of his character to the way most fans seem to hope the cinematic version would embrace and that’s with all due respect to Henry Cavill. Hoechlin’s Superman is the perfect complement to Benoist’s Supergirl. They just work so well together on screen with their charming and engaging personality.
Let’s recap the season two premiere. All the familiar faces have returned and aside from Hoechlin, the newest face in National City is a Luthor as in Lena Luthor played by the beautiful Katie McGrath of Merlin fame. Season two picked up where the season one ended with a pod crashed landed and turns out to be Mon El (Chris Wood). His introduction leads to other possibilities given his association with the Legion of Super-Heroes. This episode served more of a re-introduction to Supergirl using the opening montage as a quick overview of who the players are just in case anyone missed the series when it aired on CBS. Think of it as a new network “reboot” of sorts. Besides Lena Luthor and what role she’ll play either good or bad there was the introduction of John Corban, the future Metallo (Frederick Schmidt) who will no doubt present a hefty challenge for both Supergirl and Superman.
One entertaining and terrific side note to Monday’s opener is Cat Grant’s new assistant, Miss Teschmacher (Andrea Brooks). It’s entertaining to anyone who loves the classic Superman film that starred Christopher Reeve and remembers fondly Valerie Perrine who played the character opposite Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor. Kudos to Calista Flockhart for nailing the scream of ‘MISS TESCHMACHEERRRR!!’ that Hackman once made famous. Maybe I’m just being nostalgic but that scene made me smile.
May the Dork be with you,
