Well, all isn’t what it appeared to be on Once Upon A Time as Sunday’s episode “Strange Case” drew to a surprising close. Warning, spoilers ahead…
The latest episode saw the conclusion of the duo characters of Jekyll and Hyde. It was rather unexpected and quickly ending to their story. I thought it would at the very least take us to the midseason finale. But that’s not the case and as their story fades away, a new one in the form of Jasmine and Aladdin swoops into Storybrooke.
Before I discuss Jasmine, let’s discuss what happened to Jekyll and Hyde. Let me say how much I like and enjoy Sam Witwer and his performance as Hyde. Other than the Evil Queen of course it was refreshing to see a villain who could much wits with Rumple. Which makes his fate tied to Jekyll’s so disappointing. As it turns out, the best way to rid yourself of either your doppelganger or your “evil” side, is to kill the original. That doesn’t sound good for Regina.
Anyway, Jekyll as it would turn out isn’t as good as one has been led to believe. It turns out that Jekyll was in love with a woman named Mary but unfortunately for him, she didn’t feel the same. However, she did have feelings for his alter ego, Hyde. The thought of this type of rejection caused Jekyll to accidentally kill Mary. With the love of his life gone, Jekyll sough revenge against Rumple who had encouraged the creation of Hyde in the first place, by attempting to kill Belle.
Needless to say, his attempt is thwarted by of all people, Hook when he fights off Jekyll using his mermaid magic and in doing so, Jekyll impales himself. His death sends a domino effect that also claims the life of Hyde who was watching along with Rumple from the dock. This is when Rumple realizes if Regina wants to rid herself of the Evil Queen, she would need to die.
I love the writers of OUAT but I think they made a mistake ridding themselves of such a great villain in Hyde. With that said, I still have lots of faith in them to create a whole new world in villainy to revel in. See what I did there? That’s a nice lead in to what I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a very long time and that’s the addition of Jasmine, Aladdin and of course the evil Jafar.
May the Dork be with you,
