It’s hard to keep true love apart but that is exactly what the Evil Queen is hoping to do in the latest episode of Once Upon A Time with “Heartless”. Warning, spoilers ahead…
The Evil Queen visits Snow in her dreams and tells her that she still desires her heart as well as Charming’s because they share the same heart. If they don’t comply, the Evil Queen will curse Storybrooke with a potion. This potion that she presents to Snow is water from the River of Lost Souls thanks to Mr. Gold. When the Snow and the others wonder why Gold would help the Evil Queen, Regina admits that there has always been a little something, something between the two. The thought of which made everyone a bit nauseous. It was a well-played scene. Seeing this as a possible advantage, Regina sets it up for Zelena to run in on both the Queen and Gold at the Pawn Shop in hopes of catching them in a compromising position which she does.
As Zelena catches them kissing, Regina, Snow and Charming go in search of a sapling that when touched, shows their history together and the love they share. The Evil Queen then appears and snaps the sapling in half and warning them that time is running out for the people of Storybrooke if they don’t comply with her demands. Right now, Snow and Charming are protected by a spell from Regina to keep them safe. A helpless Emma is assisted by Hook when he uses Henry’s book to make Emma feel better and reminding her that the love her parents have for each other can conquer anything.
As the clock ticks down on Snow and Charming, the Evil Queen has gathered the townspeople at the cemetery. Snow and Charming arrive and decide to sacrifice themselves because their love will always last forever. The Evil Queen then takes out their hearts and relishes the moment but instead of destroying them, she places them back in their bodies with a curse attached. Snow drops to the ground fast asleep and the Queen vanishes with her body telling Charming that he must find her but may not like what happens when he does.
Charming does eventually find Snow and gives her true loves kiss that revives her. But in doing so, he too falls asleep. It would seem that the curse is when one is awake; the other will be asleep thus tormenting them to never be together till the spell is broken.
