When Sabine tries to learn to wield an ancient weapon of the Mandalorian’s called the Darksaber, she finds out that it’s far more difficult than expected. Warning, spoilers ahead…
Ever since Sabine discovered the Darksaber, she has been hesitant to use it. With the urging of fellow Mandalorian, Fenn Rau, Sabine agrees to learn under the guidance of Kanan. Feen believes that if she learns to use the Darksaber, she could inspire and lead an army of Mandalorian’s against the Empire. The training however doesn’t go very well and Kanan decides to let Ezra train her with the basics as he studies her from afar.
At one point during the training, Fenn hands Sabine some Mandalorian arm bands that contain advance weaponry for defense. She uses them to overtake Ezra much to Kanan’s dismay whom she challenges but was quickly defeated. Kanan questions Sabine’s dedication with Hera. But Hera encourages him to not give up. It’s not the Darksaber she fears, its her past. We learn that it wasn’t Sabine who had abandoned her family or her world. It was her family who had abandoned her and sided with the Empire. The same Empire that would later destroy her home world. With Kanan pushing Sabine to face her past, he unleashes the power within her to wield the Darksaber proving that she may be one with the Force.
So many questions remain after watching Trials of the Darksaber regarding Sabine and the Force within her and how this might all tie into not only the films but the Star Wars mythology as a whole. Does Obi-Wan Kenobi play a role as many have suspected, especially knowing that his arrival to Star Wars Rebels is on the horizon? The one thing I know for certain is that the road to finding out these answers will be a thrill ride to be sure.
