If there have been any drawbacks to Supergirl as series thus far into its second season is the lack of a strong villain. The series itself continues to be fun and Melissa Benoist is great as Kara/Supergirl but to take the series to that next level, you need a worthy villain. Monday night’s “Luthors” just may have laid the groundwork to Supergirl’s great threat… Lena Luthor. Warning, spoilers ahead…
It’s been a while since we last saw Lena’s mother Lillian Luthor who has been in prison since the early part of the season but after Lena testifies against her, Kara encourages her to visit her mother and make peace. As Lena visits Lillian, a package containing synthetic Kryptonite arrives for Corben/Metallo. Later while testifying on Lillians behalf, Corben attacks a courtroom and frees Lillian. Kara tries to intercept but cannot in order to save innocent people from a fallen crane caused by Metallo.
Lena becomes a suspect after NCPD acquired footage showing Lena stealing the Kryptonite from L-Corp. Lena maintains her innocence but was arrested anyway. Metallo breaks Lena out of prison on Lillian’s orders and wounds Guardian in the process. Despite having everything point to Lena’s guilt, Kara still believes in her innocence which puts her at odds versus her closest allies. Meanwhile, Lillian takes Lena to a secret facility that her brother Lex had built before being imprisoned. It houses a stockpile of alien weapons. Lena takes one for herself. Winn was able to decipher that the synthetic Kryptonite because of its instability, will end up exploding. Kara races to the facility to save Lena just before Metallo self-destructs. Lillian however manages to escape along with Henshaw/Cyborg Superman. Her story surely to be continued.
The closing moments of the episode had a friendly exchange between Lena and Kara with Lena claiming she’s never had a friend quite like Kara before. The two embrace and Kara leaves. This is where to shadow of doubt begins to hover over Lena as she observes the chess board in front of her and we see a flashback to her and Lex as children playing chess and Lena beating him. Lillian comments that Lena is a true Luthor after all. A foreshadowing of things to come? I think we’ve only just scratched the surface.
In the meantime, a new man enters Kara’s life and puts another wrinkle into the Kara/Mon-El romance and his name is Mister Mxyzptlk.
May the Dork be with you,
