It’s a game of cat and mouse as the rebels hatch a plan to rescue Agent Kallus before the Empire discovers he’s the spy they’re looking for. Warning, spoilers ahead…
An Imperial cruiser intercepts a shuttle that had fled the planet and brings the bounty hunter and his droids to Agent Kallus. When the bounty hunter is unmasked, it turns out to be Ezra and the droids are Chopper and AP-5. Ezra warns him that the rebels believe the Empire had intercepted his last transmission, as Fulcrum and they want to help him defect. Neither Ezra nor Kallus trust the other but the longer Ezra remains onboard, the threat of being revealed becomes a reality.
Grand Admiral Thrawn arrives and holds a meeting with some of his officers including Kallus and introduces them to Colonel Yularen who has been assigned to find the Rebel spy in their midst. Kallus was one of Yularen’s students in the academy. Knowing time is of the essence, Kallus launches his own plan to help Ezra and the droids escape and turn the focus of the investigation elsewhere. Kallus uses Lieutenant Lyste’s credentials to free Ezra and has Chopper erase Atollon from Thrawn’s database before they are discovered.
Having being fooled by Kallus into believing that Governor Pryce is the traitor, Lyste stuns Pryce when she was trying to stop the rebels from escaping. Seizing the opportunity to frame Lyste as Fulcrum, Kallus remains on board the Star Destroyer while Ezra and the others flea. What Kallus doesn’t know is that Thrawn already knows that Kallus is the spy and he intends to use that knowledge to his advantage.
This was such an outstanding episode. It’s like a game of chess between Kallus and Thrawn. As of now however it would seem that Kallus is a pawn while Thrawn is in full control of the board with all his pieces intact. Star Wars Rebels is some of the very best storytelling in the Star Wars mythology. And judging by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s appearance in next weeks episode, it’s only going to get better.
