ONCE UPON A TIME: “Tougher Than the Rest” RECAP

After missing their opportunity to return to Storybrooke, Regina and Emma must find another way home from the Wish Realm. Warning, spoilers ahead…

As you may recall it was the emergence of Robin Hood that delayed their exit from the Wish Realm. When the trio hear horses, Robin takes this as a cue to escape and Regina and Emma begin to search for a way home. Emma comes across an old friend in August aka Pinocchio and explains that she’s from another realm and needs his help to back there. Regina, uses her time to track down Robin to see if his life here is better than the one he died in. Their conversation takes a turn when the Sheriff of Nottingham arrives and places both in jail. Regina inquiries about Marion only to discover she had passed away. In this realm, Robin is a simple thief who only steals for himself. The Wish realm Rumplestiltskin arrives and frees them, but takes custody of Regina as the evil Queen in this realm had killed Belle. Regina confesses to Robin that where she came from, her Robin was murdered. Seeing that life here isn’t what he had hoped for, agrees to help Regina escape.

Meanwhile, Pinocchio completes his work on creating the portal. Emma is ready to go but Regina is slightly hesitant due to Robin. Even though he is not “her” Robin, there is still a connection. Robin gives Regina a feather, much like the Robin of Storybrooke was about to give her just before he died. She convinces him to leave with them and the three enter the portal.

ONCE UPON A TIME – “Tougher Than the Rest” – With Snow still asleep in Storybrooke, David and Hook race to stop Gideon before he can confront Emma. Gideon makes a startling confession to Belle and Gold about his whereabouts while he was missing. Meanwhile, Regina struggles with the realization that everyone, perhaps even Robin, is better off in the alternate world where the Evil Queen was defeated. And when Emma inspires a familiar face to help her and Regina return home she discovers the power to change her fate, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, MARCH 5 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Jack Rowand)
EION BAILEYGideon arrives in Storybrooke and explains to his parents, Belle and Gold about how he was raised ny the Black Fairy and how he plans on killing the Emma and taking her power to kill his grandmother and become a hero. Later, Gold meets with his son to offer help but Gideon refuses. Meanwhile, Belle goes to see David and Hook and tells them about Gideon. She wants them to come up with a plan to stop Gideon from killing Emma but not hurt him in the process.

With the help from Pinochhio, Emma, Regina and Wish Realm Robin return to Storybrooke and her visions of her battle start to play out as Gideon arrives and approaches her. The two then begin their sword battle as family on both sides watch on. Gold pleas with Gideon to stop but Gideon freezes everyone. Emma and Gideon proceed with their battle with Emma gaining the upper hand. Defeated, Gideon disappears before Emma could do any harm to him.

Later, Gold and Belle are together and he tells her that this isn’t about Emma or killing her. They must help their son and the two agree. Frustrated by his defeat, Gideon is shown at the clock tower destroying the face of it and peers down at the town of Storybrooke.

On a cute side note, we learn how Emma got the name Swan. We open with a flashback to 1990 Minnesota when a young Emma had run away from a group home and comes across a bookstore and finds “The Ugly Duckling”. A young boy, who we later find out was August approaches her to tells her the story of the duckling believing themselves into a swan.
