Never underestimate the power of a woman. Especially if she’s Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Warning, spoilers ahead…
In order to move forward, the brains behind the MCU had to take us back to the early 1990s and introduce what may become the most powerful Avenger, Captain Marvel. As far as origin stories go, directing team Bodan and Fleck uses the same formula that has made all those that preceded it so successful. Basically, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it (DC/Warner Bros, please take note).
The story is fairly routine as it follows Carol Danvers who when we first meet her is caught in a galactic war between two alien races. Danvers is a Kree solider who discovers that her roots is not based in space but from Earth. Through a series of events that lead her back to Earth and being discovered by a “young” Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) with two good eyes and a love for cats or at least one in particular named Goose, Danvers learns about her past as a fighter pilot and how she has powers that could make Superman blush.
Captain Marvel does a very good job of bridging the past with the present especially with its two post credit scenes that will give you a nice nerdgasm. The film itself is action packed with a good balance of humor, special effects and a killer soundtrack. Because of a few slow spots which can happen with origin films, it’s not my favorite Marvel film. As for Brie Larson in the title role, I thought she nailed it. Much like the castings of pivotal roles like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor before her, Larson owns it and you would be hard pressed to see anyone else in that role. I look forward to seeing her in a little more than a month from now in Avengers: Endgame and given what the early box office numbers are indicating, a sequel in the near future.
