Ok, let’s be honest. Marvel hasn’t been Marvel since Avengers: Endgame. Enter Deadpool & Wolverine. I don’t think it’s going to be a stretch to say that this will be the box office champion of 2024. And, perhaps the resurgence the comic book genre sorely needed with its many misses and superhero fatigue
Summer films as big as this one usually gets tagged as popcorn films. And that’s a bad thing? There’s enough reality in our world. It’s nice for 127 minutes to forget all that and just sit back and nerdgasm with all the marvel (pun intended) Deadpool & Wolverine gave us.
The premise is fairly simple: Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) has his peaceful existence shattered when the Time Variance Authority (introduced in the Loki series), arrive and enlists him to help protect the multiverse from an existential threat. He quickly teams up with his would-be yet very reluctant pal, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), to complete the mission and save his world.
What makes Deadpool & Wolverine standout from recent Marvel projects, is that it embraces the fatigue that plagues many fans and critics alike. It makes fun of it but not in a condescending way. Marvel is able to laugh at itself. The introduction of the aforementioned multiverse that needs saving (literally and figuratively) didn’t lend itself into making the superhero fatigue better. If anything, it made it more exhausting for the casual fan and nerve wrecking for the fandom that dissects every little detail.
Thanks to the off the charts performances of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, they deliver on the comedy and most definitely on the action. Is this a fan service film? Hell yeah it is especially with its multitude of cameos. Don’t worry I will not spoil any of that for you. All I will say, you will not be disappointed.
Will this be the last we see of either character? I really hope not. Perhaps with Jackman yes. Between this film and Logan, his Wolverine has had two very satisfying story lines. As for Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool? As of this writing, SDCC is wrapping up and the news there about the MCU is very promising. Whether or not Deadpool is part of it on going remains to be seen but if the box office numbers are any indication, the Merc with the Mouth probably has a good future ahead of him.
