WHO SHOULD BE CAST IN A JUSTICE LEAGUE FILM?

Rumors are running rampant once again about the possibility of Christian Bale returning to the cape and cowl for a Justice League film. I hope these rumors are true. I think it would be important from a continuity standpoint at least from the start to have the most recent actor to play Batman to be in Justice League. Going forward, the actor could change ala James Bond but don’t let JL be his launching point because it could be a potential disaster.

The best approach in my opinion is to begin with Bale and in between a second JL film, have a new Batman film with a new actor if needed. This type of transition would serve the film franchise better. With that said, let’s have fun casting the Justice League.
BATMAN: Christian Bale. As stated in my earlier blog (http://www.the-dork-knight.com/2013/01/i-am-batman.html#more), he is simply the best Batman to date. And it would be great to see him act against Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Speaking of which…
SUPERMAN: Henry Cavill. This is with a lot riding on Man of Steel. If it’s the success that Warner Bros is hoping for, than it’s probably all systems go for JL. If not, well you may as well stick a fork in the franchise. There is no questioning Cavill’s physical look. But can he and director Zack Snyder avoid becoming Box Office kryptonite?

WONDER WOMAN: Since she has yet to have her own film this is a wide open casting call. I think Gina Carano fits the physical attributes that the character of Wonder Woman should possess. She holds own in male dominated films like Haywire and she has one coming up with Fast & Furious 6. A wild card could be Mary Elizabeth Winstead from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Die Hard’s 4 and 5. She has a classic Wonder Woman look like Lynda Carter and she has experience in a comic book related feature. And she too has experience in male dominated action films.
GREEN LANTERN: Ryan Reynolds. There are several reasons why the Green Lantern film failed but Ryan Reynolds in my opinion was not one of them. He did a great job with a somewhat weak script. He has great screen presence and would more than hold his own in any ensemble.
THE FLASH: Yet another DC iconic character yet to have his own feature. The Flash traditionally is a smart talking wise ass. He often likes to challenge Superman to a race. So, who could pull that off? How about another Ryan? As in Ryan Gossling? Or how about Justin Timberlake? Both actors have shown great diversity from dramatic acting to comedic. If Chris Evans wasn’t tied to being Captain America, I would add him to the mix.
AQUAMAN: The red-headed step child of the DC Universe who isn’t even red-headed. I guess it wouldn’t be a Justice League film without the King of Atlantis. How do you do it and who do you cast? The character of Aquaman works fairly well in the comic books and in animation. But he would be a challenge to film in live action for any director. Challenging but not impossible. With the right director (Christopher Nolan), he could actually be a fun character to watch. Maybe Justice League’s answer to the Hulk from the Avengers? Remember there was a lot of uncertainty regarding how the Hulk would work and yet he stole every scene he was in. Could Channing Tatum make it work? I think he could. He was more than adequate in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Because he doesn’t have to carry the film on his back, adding him in a supporting role won’t make or break the film.

And finally…
CYBORG: Thanks to the New 52 that DC launched over a year ago, the character of Cyborg has been elevated to all-star status among the JL elite. This character whose real name is Victor Stone has a long and proud history of his own and enjoyed a wonderful run with the Teen Titans. In casting Cyborg, you can go with brawn or with brains. I would go with brains and a smart actor. A young actor I have been impressed with is Michael B. Jordan. His credits include the TV series Friday Night Lights and Parenthood as well as film roles in Red Tails and Chronicle. He could be a breakout star and someone to keep your eye on.

This of course are my own opinions. I’m sure Warner Bros. have their own. Let’s just hope that instead of wishful casting, we can have a new debate on who has been cast in these prominent and coveted roles.

May the Dork be with you,
JPB
